Finding God with Fog Lights

December 31, 2016 by Rachael Hubers

The two-lane northern Michigan highway was frosted like a cake. There was nothing for me to follow but thin, black car tracks and the occasional fellow driver, whom I tried to stay away from. No street lights. Just darkness flooded with swirling flurries. I flipped on the fog lights. Sleek, dark pavement peeked through the snow. The sides of the road spilled off into powdery ditches leading to a thick wall of evergreens.

I was driving Up North, as we Michiganders call it, to my family’s cottage for our annual New Year’s ski trip. Continue Reading

Stop Chasing Stillness

November 22, 2016 by Rachael Hubers

What do you do on the beach? I’m here now on vacation with my family, and my brain doesn’t get how to chill. I’ll sit out in the sun for a bit, but shortly thereafter my mind nags me to walk, write or devour books to keep it busy. You see, its automatic is fastness. Going. Doing. It time-travels even when I’m in the most peaceful places, places where worries should not go. In the midst of paradise, my brain tells me we’re not doing enough. It asks where life will take us next, and who with. Does this ever happen to you?

Buried Treasure

July 9, 2016 by Rachael Hubers

In my family, cottage clean up is a mandatory, all-hands-on-deck kind of thing. We get the house looking all cute for summer because summer means visits from friends and grandparents, and that means appearing a touch tidier and more normal than we actually are. My task was to resurrect the garden. There were no flowers to plant. I was simply asked to yank out the weeds, mess up the soil, and spare the rose bushes that were somehow alive after a northern Michigan winter.

So, pretending I had a green thumb, I started attacking the gnarly weeds and old plant roots with my mini shovel. I yanked, raked, and dug until I ached all over. For those of you who are gardening newbies like me, don’t try this at home unless you’re prepared for a full-body workout! There were many, many weeds and they dove real deep into the ground.

Then it hit me: THIS IS MY LIFE, or what God has been doing in it this past season.

So, Where Ya From?

June 30, 2015 by Rachael Hubers

I just stood there awkwardly jamming hors d’oeuvres into my mouth. When I finally worked up the gumption go over and talk to someone, my heel broke and mini hotdogs went flying off of my mini plate. Some rendition of this worst-case hypothetical flashes through my mind in those last-minute makeup-check-in-car moments. I actually love going to networking events and meeting new people. I attended three happy hour get-togethers this past weekend! But I admit that a few minutes before I walk in, a little voice in my head is like, “Are you sure you want to go?”

About Me

Hi. I’m Rachael, a candid friend, writer, marketing specialist and former ACE-certified personal trainer on fire for God. I love joyful, simple moments with family and friends, tranquil morning hours, and heart-pumping workouts (hello, stair master!). I also enjoy Michigan lakes, orange roses, Chai tea lattes and non-fiction books.

One thing I know for sure is that faith is not just something we have, a good luck charm, or even a winding path. It’s a long, upward journey. God encourages us, step by step, to become more like Him. He works in our hearts as we work through the experiences of life. I encourage you to look back and enjoy the view with me, to savor moments and lessons that we’ve collected along the way.
