Tribe Building 101

July 25, 2016 by Rachael Hubers

A few weeks ago my friend Sophie and I had an impromptu wine and movie night. We shuffled through her stack of DVDs settled on a retro, stupid-funny movie called Superstar. If you’ve ever heard someone say “SUPERSTARRR” in a weird whisper voice, this is where that comes from. 20-something-year-old Will Ferrell is the main character’s dreamy crush and the snooty, blonde stepmom from Parent Trap is the popular mean girl. Most of the movie was absolutely ridiculous. And when I say ridiculous, I mean the lead Mary Katherine Gallagher, a quirky Catholic school girl desperate for her first real kiss, talks dirty to a stop sign and other inanimate objects for practice. But there were some surprisingly sincere takeaways. When Mary’s grandma finally gets on-board with her granddaughter’s dream of being a “SUPERSTAR” (aka winning the school talent show), she tells Mary she must compete well and for herself, not just to win over her crush.

If you’ve scrolled back through my blog, you may have noticed that several months went by when I posted absolutely nothing. “Where’d she go?” you wondered.Continue Reading

Buried Treasure

July 9, 2016 by Rachael Hubers

In my family, cottage clean up is a mandatory, all-hands-on-deck kind of thing. We get the house looking all cute for summer because summer means visits from friends and grandparents, and that means appearing a touch tidier and more normal than we actually are. My task was to resurrect the garden. There were no flowers to plant. I was simply asked to yank out the weeds, mess up the soil, and spare the rose bushes that were somehow alive after a northern Michigan winter.

So, pretending I had a green thumb, I started attacking the gnarly weeds and old plant roots with my mini shovel. I yanked, raked, and dug until I ached all over. For those of you who are gardening newbies like me, don’t try this at home unless you’re prepared for a full-body workout! There were many, many weeds and they dove real deep into the ground.

Then it hit me: THIS IS MY LIFE, or what God has been doing in it this past season.

Toning Your Real “Trouble Zone”

July 18, 2015 by Rachael Hubers

After barbell squats, walking and jumping lunges, dead lifts, kettle ball swings, and balance ball hamstring curls, I know it’s not over yet. I slide down the wall’s surface until I am seated sans seat, legs bent at 90 degrees. I press my back firmly into the wall, filling every margin of space, trying desperately to add friction. After just a short while, my quadriceps ignite and my hands start moving about like Will Farrell’s in Anchorman—“I don’t know what to do with my hands!” I pause there, mind racing, legs trembling, quivering on the edge of “I can” and “I can’t.”

It’s a wall sit, one of many simple, static exercises that people often despise. Although chubby, pubescent me used to be one of these people who wanted to quit when coaches ordered these after tennis practice and a round of sprints, I now consider wall sits a staple in my lower body workout.

When I was recently a personal trainer for a year and a half, my clients’ biggest obstacle was not a physical “trouble zone” or “problem area,” but rather, mental strength. It was pushing through discomfort, self-doubt, and impatience to come out stronger on the other side. Unlike dynamic exercises, wall sits, planks, and the like give you the unique opportunity to remain still with your own thoughts and without the distraction of movement or the number of reps left. Time moves slowly here. Much like holding breath under water, our own minds tend to defeat us before our bodies reach their limit.

About Me

Hi. I’m Rachael, a candid friend, writer, marketing specialist and former ACE-certified personal trainer on fire for God. I love joyful, simple moments with family and friends, tranquil morning hours, and heart-pumping workouts (hello, stair master!). I also enjoy Michigan lakes, orange roses, Chai tea lattes and non-fiction books.

One thing I know for sure is that faith is not just something we have, a good luck charm, or even a winding path. It’s a long, upward journey. God encourages us, step by step, to become more like Him. He works in our hearts as we work through the experiences of life. I encourage you to look back and enjoy the view with me, to savor moments and lessons that we’ve collected along the way.
